What causes roof stains?

Those unattractive, dark stains that reside on your roof are caused by “blue-green” algae, Gloeocapsa magma. It thrives and grows on asphalt shingled roofs in much of the United States. Growth of this algae usually starts on shaded areas of the roof, and usually on the North side. As the algae grows, it holds moisture which causes the growth process to accelerate. This is the reason the roof stains get worse over time.

Algae spores are carried by wind, birds, squirrels, etc. It is unavoidable. If your roof is clean now, look at your neighbors roof. If they have a stained roof, then it won't be long and your roof will be stained as well.
